Vaio Type U with Linux Fedora Core2

Install

Using PXE
Since Fedora Core 2 does not provice boot floppy image, you will need DVD/CD-ROM to install FC2 locally. However, because Vaio Type U does not have PCMCIA slot, you will need USB or IEEE1394 DVD/CD drive. If there drives are not available, the only choice is Network Install. To do this, you will need the following steps.
  • Go Vaio Type U's BIOS Menu. Enable network boot.
  • Set up a PXE server on the same subnet as type U. (If you would like to setup PXE server on linux, This site might be useful)
  • Boot Vaio Type U. Then, Press F8 key and select Remote Install.
  • Follow normal installing step

Device Configuration

Mouse Pointer around LCD
  • add "i8042.nomux" to boot option

Sound
  • mute External Amplifier with alsamixer command

LCD related
  • If you want to control brightness of LCD, you will need to install sonypi module and spicctrl.
  • i810switch allows you to toggle external display output. (Note: you cannot control LCD display output)

Wireless
  • Go madwifi's web page and get madwifi source from CVS.
  • If your system does not have sharutils, install it. Otherwise you cannot build madwifi module.
  • Build madwifi and install it.
  • If you want to use WPA, this site will be useful. (although I haven't tried yet.)

Zoom, Rotate key around LCD
  • Every key event looks a port1=0x5c, port2=0x31 event with the sonypi module in kernel2.6.8. So, I cannot use these keys so far.
  • Same events as above are triggered by pressing Power key and Display out key. So, these keys are not available either.

Dual Screen
  • Acceleraetd-X LX supports dual screen with i855 chip.
  • Although XFree86 4.4.99.7 supports Dual Head with i855, (see here), I cannot make it so far.
